The HP Omen 17 is a high-end gaming laptop with a robust Intel i9 processor and Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card, suitable for intensive gaming, 3D rendering, machine learning, and engineering tasks. It comes with ample storage and memory, a 17.3-inch display with high resolution and refresh rate, ensuring a vibrant and smooth visual experience, but lacks a touchscreen. The laptop is built to handle demanding applications but could be considered less portable due to its weight and size. With an excellent battery, capable of supporting typical usage for a significant duration, it's equipped with various connectivity options including Thunderbolt, HDMI, and Ethernet, alongside modern features such as hardware ray tracing, DLSS, and a backlit keyboard. However, the tradeoff for high performance is a lower portability score, reflected in its weight and physical dimensions. Give Feedback

Ratings by Category

Gaming, 3D & AI:
4.8
PerfectRec’s Gaming and 3D Score strongly emphasizes graphics processing capability as well as general performance, while also taking into account other factors that impact suitability for gaming and 3D work. While performance (especially graphics performance) is the most important factor determining this score, we also give modest weight to screen quality, heat management, keyboard quality, and storage.
Engineering & Design:
4.7
The HP Omen 17 excels in engineering and design use because it boasts a powerful CPU and high-capacity GPU, essential for complex calculations and rendering, alongside ample RAM for multitasking and heavy workloads. Additionally, the laptop's high-quality screen ensures crisp and accurate visuals, key for detail-oriented tasks, although it is less portable due to its larger size and weight.
Keyboard Quality:
4.6
The Keyboard Quality score is based on the PerfectRec experts’ assessment of tactile feedback, typing comfort, keyboard reliability and typing noise.
General Use:
4.5
The HP Omen 17 provides excellent general use performance with its high-end CPU and substantial RAM, ensuring smooth multitasking and demanding processing tasks. The combination of an IPS screen with good pixel density and color accuracy enhances visual quality for various media, but the laptop's low portability score and moderate battery life may limit its use on the go.
General Use Screen Quality:
4.4
The general use screen score is based on the screen technology, contrast ratio, resolution, brightness, color gamut and color accuracy. This score does not take into account specialized display features for specific use cases, such as high refresh rate for gaming.
Build Quality:
4.2
PerfectRec’s Build Quality Score incorporates case materials, display and keyboard flex, hinge quality, chassis rigidity, and overall reliability. Our assessment of build quality includes many details that are difficult to quantify. Our laptop experts use their best judgment to produce the final score.
Operating Noise:
4.0
PerfectRec’s Operating Noise Score is based on fan noise measurements. Laptops with a fanless design, such as Macbooks, receive the maximum score.
Portability:
3.0
PerfectRec’s portability rating takes into account the volume and thickness of the laptop as well as its weight.

NotebookCheck

Marc Herter | September 2022
"The HP Omen 17 (2022) gaming laptop has a stylish case and hardware with lots of potential. The HP Omen 17 is a fairly unobtrusive gaming laptop. A material combination of plastic and metal gives the case a high stability and a quality surface feel. The unspectacular design is pleasing and is hardly indicative of the laptop's high performance potential. The Intel Core i7-12700H in particular is able to perform well once again. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is also strong in the gaming notebook. Demanding games run smoothly in Full HD resolution. The HP Omen 17 is a good gaming laptop that delivers partly excellent performance. But even at this performance level, cheaper alternatives are available."
