Ratings by Category

Portability:
4.6
PerfectRec’s portability rating takes into account the volume and thickness of the laptop as well as its weight.
Operating Noise:
4.6
PerfectRec’s Operating Noise Score is based on fan noise measurements. Laptops with a fanless design, such as Macbooks, receive the maximum score.
General Use:
4.1
The MSI Modern 14 is equipped with a capable CPU and adequate RAM, ensuring smooth multitasking and responsiveness for general use applications. Its 14-inch IPS display offers good screen quality, while its light weight and compact dimensions ensure easy portability, complemented by satisfactory battery life.
Battery Life:
4.0
PerfectRec’s Battery Life rating is based on hours of battery life in typical usage scenarios.

4.0
The Keyboard Quality score is based on the PerfectRec experts’ assessment of tactile feedback, typing comfort, keyboard reliability and typing noise.
Engineering & Design:
3.9
The MSI Modern 14 has a mid-range CPU and integrated GPU suitable for moderate design tasks but may struggle with more intensive engineering software due to limited processing power. Its IPS display offers good color and viewing angles, but the screen's modest resolution and color space coverage could limit the precision needed for high-detail design work..
General Use Screen Quality:
3.7
The general use screen score is based on the screen technology, contrast ratio, resolution, brightness, color gamut and color accuracy. This score does not take into account specialized display features for specific use cases, such as high refresh rate for gaming.
Gaming, 3D & AI:
3.3
The MSI Modern 14 has an integrated GPU which can handle some gaming and 3D tasks, but it's not as powerful as dedicated gaming GPUs for demanding titles. Its screen refresh rate is standard at 60Hz, which is fine for casual gaming but won't be as smooth for fast-paced games compared to higher refresh rate displays.

Rtings

Alexander Tozzi, Ryan Lim, and John Peroramas | October 2023
"The MSI Modern 14 is okay for school use. It's very compact, so it's easy to carry around. It has a sharp display, a spacious keyboard, and a reasonably large touchpad. Its Intel 13th Gen CPU and integrated graphics can handle general productivity tasks like text processing and web browsing; however, don't expect to do anything intensive like 3D modeling or physics simulations. Unfortunately, the battery lasts less than five hours of light use, and the display doesn't get bright enough to combat glare."
